WiSA Celebrates 10 Years of Impact.
Women in Surgery Africa (WiSA) proudly celebrated 10 years of impact under the theme “Scalpel, Roses and Thorns: Growing from Within and Beyond.” The milestone event brought together national leaders, including Dr. Ines Nduwimana, Minister of Health of Burundi, Dr. Gallina, Vice President of the Burundi Surgical Society, and Professor Laston Chikoya, President of COSECSA, alongside partners, fellows, and members, to reflect on a decade of growth, resilience, and shared purpose.
Founded in 2015, WiSA has played a critical role in advancing women in surgical training across the region. To date, 255 female surgeons have qualified, with 280 female trainees currently in training. This year, several women attained fellowship status, with three emerging as top performers in their subspecialties highlighting the strength and impact of WiSA’s mentorship and support networks.
The celebration also recognized the dedication of WiSA’s founders, secretariat, and country chapter leaders, whose commitment continues to propel the organization forward. WiSA expressed deep appreciation to its partners for their continued support in mentorship, research, leadership development, scholarships, and global engagement.
While acknowledging challenges faced during the year, the WiSA community reaffirmed its resilience and unity as a surgical sisterhood. The gathering also paused to honour the memory of Dr. Hamunyela of Namibia, recognizing her lasting contribution to the WiSA family.
As WiSA looks beyond its first decade, the organization remains committed to excellence, humility, and service continuing to inspire and support the next generation of women surgeons across Africa and beyond.
