Applications Open for the WiSA Shield Maiden Award 2026

COSECSA Women in Surgery Africa (WiSA) is delighted to announce that applications are now open for the WiSA Shield Maiden Award 2026.

Generously sponsored by Dr. Agneta Odera, this prestigious award recognises an exceptional female surgeon who has overcome significant challenges in her career, inspires others, and actively empowers women in surgery.

The recipient will receive a USD 1,000 Goodwill Ambassador Grant, together with additional support covering attendance and accommodation at the COSECSA/WiSA Conference.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should:

  • Be an outstanding female surgeon whose achievements inspire others.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to mentoring and empowering women in surgery and training.
  • Be an agent of positive change within their community.
  • Be from the country hosting the current year’s COSECSA AGM and Scientific Conference.
  • Be willing to serve as the WiSA Goodwill Ambassador in their country during the following year.

Application Requirements

Applications should be submitted via nomination and must include:

  • Biodata and country of origin.
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) or surgical portfolio highlighting relevant achievements.
  • A one-year plan outlining activities to promote awareness and support for WiSA.
  • A commitment to submit an annual written report (with photographs where possible) detailing activities undertaken.
